Pakistani sports fans haven’t had a great week. The men’s cricket team lost to India in the Asia Cup on Sunday and Arshad Nadeem missed out on the podium at the World Athletics Championships on Thursday. In these dark times, Sidra Amin gave the country the little bit of light we all needed. Amin scored her second consecutive century against South Africa on Friday, becoming the first Pakistani woman to score back to back hundreds in the One Day International (ODI) format. It was the first meeting between the regional neighbours since a four-day conflict in May left more than 70 people dead. ISLAMABAD: After the submission of petitions on different issues by five Islamabad High Court (IHC) judges, the ball is now in the Supreme Court’s court, as it will decide their grievances related to judicial independence as well as the trichotomy of powers. This is not the first time the IHC judges have approached the apex court. In March last year, they had written a letter to the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) seeking guidance on the interference of executive agencies in judicial functions. It is noteworthy that Justice Muhammad Arbab Tahir was also part of the group of judges at that…

LONDON: Nuclear-armed Pakistan’s mutual defence agreement with Saudi Arabia may have a cascading effect in the Arabian Peninsula, as Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar hinted on Friday that other countries are also showing interest in forging similar pacts with Islamabad. “It is premature to say anything definitive, but after this development, other countries have expressed interest in similar arrangements,” said Ishaq Dar, who is also the defence minister of Pakistan, while speaking to journalists in London. “However, such agreements follow a due process. Even with Saudi Arabia, it took several months to finalise.” Riyadh and Islamabad signed the defence pact…
