RAWALPINDI: In a significant development in the Toshakhana-2 case involving a Bulgari jewellery set allegedly retained by PTI founder Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, two key witnesses have testified that the appraiser was pressured into undervaluing the ornaments. The case centres on an expensive set of jewellery — a necklace, earrings, bracelets, and rings — gifted by the Saudi royal family to the former prime minister. According to investigators, the set was assessed at an artificially low price, enabling Khan and his wife to purchase it at a fraction of its actual worth, thereby causing a considerable loss…
When Mary May started buying from third-party sellers on Walmart’s online marketplace, she said she assumed the products she was purchasing were the same as the ones she’d long bought in stores. So in late March when she said she saw a “ridiculous sale” on her favorite Neuriva brain supplements on Walmart’s marketplace, she bought eight bottles for her and her sister. But when some of the once-daily oral supplements arrived from a seller calling itself Lifeworks-ACS, the 59-year-old mother of three noticed there were misspellings on the bottle and the packaging looked different than it usually did. Weeks later, CNBC confirmed…
ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court has set aside a Rs44 billion fine the Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) had imposed on the country’s sugar mills, ruling that both the original decision and a later appellate order were unlawful. A division bench comprising Justice Shakeel Ahmed and Justice Aamer Farooq set aside the Competition Appellate Tribunal’s May 21, 2025 order and the CCP’s August 13, 2021 “casting vote” decision. The dispute began in November 2020 when the CCP issued identical show-cause notices to the Pakistan Sugar Mills Association (PSMA) and mills nationwide, accusing them of violating Section 4 of the Competition Act,…
Nanomachines, son! Photo Illustration: Google Gemini I confess, the title is misleading, and I apologize for that, but we are inching ever closer to making microbots and one day, nanomachines. Scientists at the University of Gothenburg have made light-powered gears that can fit inside a human hair. For reference, a human hair can range from 0.017 to 0.186 millimeters (mm) in diameter. If you tried to straighten out your hair and examine it head-on, you likely wouldn’t be able to see anything. A singular microgear is a mere 0.016 mm in diameter. Researchers had initially only been able to manufacture…

Pakistan again pressed the United Nations Security Council to demand an immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire in Gaza on Friday. Addressing the Council, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN Asim Iftikhar Ahmed reaffirmed Islamabad’s “unwavering support” for the Palestinian right to self-determination and urged an end to Israeli military operations. He said Pakistan “stands with humanity, justice and international law,” noting that Gaza’s civilians remain under relentless bombardment and blockade, with children starving, hospitals destroyed and families lacking food, medicine and shelter. Ahmed stressed that Pakistan stands with the majority of Council members and the broader UN membership in reflecting the…
PARIS: Virgil van Dijk scored a dramatic late winner to grab Liverpool a 3-2 Champions League victory over Atletico Madrid, while Paris St-Germain kicked off their title defence by thrashing Atalanta on Wednesday. A Mohamed Salah free-kick flew in off Andy Robertson for…
The US has announced that it will revoke the sanctions waiver granted to India in 2018 for operations at Iran’s strategic Chabahar Port, a move that could impact Delhi’s role in developing the key terminal, media reported on Thursday. The decision, effective September 29, 2025, comes as part of Washington’s “maximum pressure” campaign against Tehran. The waiver, issued under the Iran Freedom and Counter-Proliferation Act (IFCA), had allowed India and other countries to continue work on the port without facing US penalties. Chabahar is of strategic importance for India as it provides a trade route to Afghanistan and Central Asia,…

TOKYO: Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone brought the house down on Thursday by coming within a whisker of breaking the four-decade-old women’s 400 metres world record while Botswana’s Busang Collen Kebinatshipi impressively won the men’s one-lap title. McLaughlin-Levrone ran through the rain to take gold and post the second fastest time in history of 47.78sec at the Tokyo National Stadium. It will surely only be a matter of time before the 400m hurdles world record holder breaks the mark of 47.60 set by East Germany’s Marita Koch in 1985, which has long had question marks hanging over it. McLaughlin-Levrone’s decision to switch from…
