SAN FRANCISCO — Aaron Judge remembers childhood afternoons spent in the stands of what is now known as Oracle Park, getting autographs from players like Rich Aurilia, his favorite Giants infielder of that era, and imagining his big league dreams in orange and black and rounding those beautiful bases over and over again. He wouldn’t realize that original dream twice until Friday, when Judge appeared in his first career game at China Basin in the Yankees’ series opener against San Francisco. He hit a three-run homer in the third inning and a solo homer in the sixth off San Francisco…

Third-party litigation funding has become a controversial topic in the U.S. court system over the past decade, but experts say it has a surprising history that dates back to medieval England. This practice was once prohibited by a common law principle known as “chanparty” or “maintenance,” which prohibited parties unrelated to a litigation from providing funds in exchange for a financial interest in the outcome of the litigation. Third-party litigation funding as we know it began in Australia about 30 years ago and has since spread to other common law countries such as the United States and Britain, said James…
Aaron Judge was unstoppable in May. (Photo by Tearon W. Henderson/Getty Images)About a month ago, there was concern that New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge was starting to decline. As of April 22, he was batting .174 with a .308 on-base percentage, .337 slugging percentage, three home runs and 31 strikeouts. Judge is 32 years old, and it was entirely conceivable that his hard-hitting, strikeout-heavy pitching style was starting to catch up with him.Let me just say that there’s nothing to worry about too much right now.In Friday’s 6-2 win over the San Francisco Giants, Judge hit his 19th and…
The ruling Liberal Democratic Party made last-minute concessions on a bill to strengthen the Political Funds Control Act, but it is unlikely to close the many loopholes that are making the bill less effective. The proposed amendments do not tighten regulations on donations by companies and organizations, and many of the system designs are half-baked, with decisions to be made in the future, leaving doubts about their feasibility. The Diet should not rush to a vote, but should deliberate the amendments fairly and carefully. In preparation for the passage of a bill to amend the Political Funds Control Act in…

One business told KTVB that sales have dropped 55 percent since the meters were installed. BOISE, Idaho — The City of Caldwell officially launched new parking meters in the city’s downtown on May 15. But two weeks later, some downtown business owners are suing KTVB, asking that the meters be removed. The city intended to install the meters to improve traffic flow and eliminate “long-distance parkers,” who stay in the same spot for hours. Previously, employees and other drivers would park in front of businesses for long periods of time, blocking customers from entering certain businesses. But now they’re facing…
