US President Donald Trump announced Friday that the draw for the 2026 World Cup will be held in Washington on December 5 — and then jokingly asked if he could keep the golden trophy for himself. The draw for the 48-team football championship will be held at the Kennedy Center in the US capital, where Trump recently installed himself as chairman in what he called a war on “woke” culture. “It’s the biggest, probably the biggest event in sports,” Trump, flanked by FIFA chief Gianni Infantino, said as he made the announcement in the Oval Office of the White House.…
GILGIT: As Gilgit-Baltistan continues to stagger under the weight of climate changeinduced disasters, a massive glacier burst in Ghizer district on Wednesday night unleashed catastrophic flooding, choking the Ghizer River and triggering large-scale devastation in downstream villages. Rescue 1122 confirmed on Friday that at least 200 people were pulled to safety after the outburst at Tali Das in the Gupis area blocked the river, creating an artificial lake and sparking fears of high-level flooding further downstream. “Several traumatised residents have lost their homes. Medical teams are providing assistance to the displaced,” the rescue agency said in a statement. According to…

The Japan Boxing Federation (JBF) said the unnamed 39-year-old became unresponsive after sparring for three rounds at three minutes each in Tokyo on Aug 8. He was rushed to hospital and underwent emergency surgery, and is still in intensive care. The JBF, which oversees amateur boxing in Japan, said the man had not fought a match for over 10 years and had been in training to…

Both sides also reaffirmed their resolve to strengthen the all-weather strategic partnership and enhance coordination at regional and international forums. LAHORE: The six-member Coaching Affairs Committee formed by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) last month to interview and recommend new coaches has seen little involvement from its designated members, with only one actively carrying out the task alongside officials not part of the committee. The committee — announced on July 16 — includes Director High Performance Aqib Javed, Director Domestic Abdullah Khurram Niazi, Director HR and Administration Abdul Faisal Malik, Pakistan men’s head coach Mike Hesson, Head of Coaching Education Shahid Aslam, and GM Academies Imran Abbas. However, sources told Dawn that only Shahid Aslam has been conducting interviews, joined…
ISLAMABAD: Information Minister Attaullah Tarar on Friday praised the media’s role in countering Indian narratives during the conflict, describing the period as “extraordinary circumstances”. Addressing a meeting of the Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors (CPNE) in Islamabad, Tarar commended journalists for delivering Pakistan’s message to the world against India’s far larger media machine. “Right from the beginning, it was a war of narratives,” he noted. “The enemy had greater resources, international interest, lobbying and PR firms. International media outlets had employees of Indian origin because of their greater population.” Tarar stressed that Pakistan’s strength lay not in numbers or resources…
DUBAI: Pakistan pace spearhead Shaheen Shah Afridi has expressed confidence in the country’s emerging talent, backing youngsters to step up in the absence of former mainstays Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan. Babar and Rizwan, once Pakistan’s revered T20I opening pair, have been sidelined from the format as the team pursues a more aggressive approach under new leadership. The transition follows the appointments of Mike Hesson as Pakistan’s white-ball head coach and Salman Ali Agha as T20I captain earlier this year. Hesson has publicly stated that Babar and Rizwan need to refine their T20I skills to reclaim their spots in the…

Both Shahrez and Shershah are nephews of former prime minister Imran Khan. According to family sources, plainclothes personnel intercepted the car driven by Aleema Khan’s husband and forcefully took Shershah away. Following the arrest, Aleema Khan told the media that these actions reflected the government’s fear. “My son was abroad. He knew that when he returned, they would arrest him, but still he came back —…
