Provincial government covers 30% of total cost, balance paid via easy monthly instalments with partner banks support

The Balochistan government has unveiled a new electric bike programme aimed at easing transportation difficulties for students and young people while promoting affordable and environmentally friendly mobility across the province.

The initiative was approved by the provincial cabinet during a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti. Under the scheme, students will be given priority access to electric bikes at subsidised rates, with the provincial government bearing 30 per cent of the total cost. The remaining amount will be paid through easy monthly instalments in collaboration with partner banks.

According to officials, the programme has been designed in response to growing concerns over rising fuel prices and limited public transport options, particularly for students who commute long distances to schools, colleges and universities. By providing an alternative mode of transport, the government hopes to reduce daily travel expenses and improve punctuality and attendance in educational institutions.

In addition to students, working women and government employees will also be eligible to apply for electric bikes under the scheme. Members of the general public may benefit through a structured financing mechanism, subject to eligibility criteria that will be announced later.

Officials said the project is part of the provincial government’s broader strategy to encourage the use of clean energy and reduce dependence on conventional fuel-powered vehicles. The shift towards electric mobility is expected to lower carbon emissions, decrease noise pollution and contribute to cleaner urban environments in major cities of Balochistan.

The cabinet stressed the need for transparency and merit-based implementation, directing relevant departments to ensure that the selection process remains fair, accessible and free from political influence. Financial institutions will play a key role in managing the instalment plans to ensure sustainability and wider outreach.

Addressing the meeting, Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti said public funds must be utilised responsibly and directed towards initiatives that provide direct relief to ordinary citizens. He emphasised that investment in students and youth was essential for long-term social stability and economic development in the province.

The provincial government said detailed guidelines regarding eligibility, application procedures and timelines would be issued separately. Once implemented, the electric bike programme is expected to ease mobility challenges, support continuity in education and provide practical financial relief to thousands of families across Balochistan.
