The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government has strongly criticised alleged tax evasion by influential political figures, stating that corrupt individuals cannot promote national unity.
In a statement, K-P Information Adviser Barrister Saif accused the Sharif family of financial misconduct, mentioning that Hasan Nawaz has been declared a tax defaulter in London. “The Sharif family is now being exposed internationally for tax evasion,” he said.
He added that while Pakistanis abroad work hard to bring a good name to the country, certain political figures tarnish its reputation. “Imran Khan made Pakistan proud on the global stage, while the Sharifs have been a source of disgrace,” he remarked.
Referring to Britain’s strict financial laws, Barrister Saif said the Sharifs continue to evade taxes even in a highly regulated system. He alleged that their businesses in Pakistan thrive on financial misdeeds, while legitimate investors struggle.
“Half the family is in London, the other half in Pakistan, and both are engaged in tax evasion. This is why their empire keeps expanding while others face financial ruin,” he claimed.
The K-P government spokesperson further accused the Sharif family of laundering money abroad. “They have ruled Pakistan, but their assets continue to grow overseas. Their pattern of looting the national treasury and laundering money remains unchanged.”
Barrister Saif concluded that corrupt figures can never establish national unity. “The nation is fed up with this corrupt elite. As long as they remain in power, national unity will remain an illusion,” he said.
The United Kingdom declared Hassan Nawaz, son of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President and former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, a tax defaulter on Wednesday, imposing a £5.2 million fine on him.
British authorities included Hassan Nawaz in their latest list of tax defaulters, officially published on a government website.
According to the report, Hassan Nawaz failed to pay approximately £9.4 million in taxes between 5 April 2015 and 6 April 2016.
The UK’s tax authority has now penalised him for the overdue payments. Further details have been made available in public records.
Moreover, last year, London High Court had declared Hassan Nawaz bankrupt in a tax case initiated by the United Kingdom’s Tax and Revenue Department.
The bankruptcy ruling against Hassan Nawaz came in relation to Case No. 694 of 2023, which was filed on August 25, 2023, in the London High Court.
The court’s decision follows Hassan’s financial disputes with British authorities over tax matters, marking a significant development in the family’s legal challenges abroad.
