“It already feels like home,” Vincent Kompany said after being announced as manager of German Bundesliga club Bayern Munich.
Bayern confirmed on Wednesday that Kompany, 38, had been appointed as manager on a three-year contract to replace Thomas Tuchel.
The Belgian faced relegation from the Premier League with Burnley in the 2023-24 season.
“My mindset is that I never think I’ve worked at a top club,” Kompany said.
“A top club is the environment you create. It’s the mentality you have towards your job in good times and bad times that defines working at the top level.”
“I feel like I’m home now.”
Kompany began his managerial career at Anderlecht, the club where he also began his playing career.
He led the team to the Belgian Cup final in the 2021-22 season but left at the end of that season to take charge of Burnley.
Kompany guided the Clarets to the Championship title with 101 points and secured promotion to the Premier League in his first season in charge, but they soon could not avoid a return to the second tier after finishing 19th last season.
Bayern finished third in the Bundesliga last season, 18 points behind holders Bayer Leverkusen, bringing an end to their streak of 11 straight titles.
For the first time since 2011-12, Bayern finished a season without a trophy.
“I’m always motivated. I wake up every morning and night wanting to make everyone around me better,” Kompany added.
“My life isn’t defined by the successful years, but by the difficult times.
“I don’t want to be successful on my own, I want to bring as many people with me as possible. It’s just my nature.”
