With golden hour-themed beauty products launching everywhere, it’s no wonder sunset blush is quickly becoming a top contender for this year’s beauty trend. Whether you’re about to embark on a European summer or want to keep your summer glow through the winter, Sunset Blush won’t let you down. Glazed donut skin was all the rage two summers ago, but last year saw bronzed latte makeup and tanned strawberry girl makeup. But this year’s top trend is to take inspiration from beautiful summer sunsets and break free from food-inspired beauty.
Just as the name suggests, Sunset Blush features color gradients and highlights that mimic the sun setting in the sky by blending shades such as orange, coral, pink, and red. On TikTok, the hashtag #SunsetBlush has already attracted more than 22.5 million posts. Why is that look trending? Makeup artist Clarissa Luna, who works with celebrities like Megan Fox and Jennifer Coolidge, says warmer temperatures inspire us to be bolder.

“We’re coming out of a long winter where colors are muted and matte,” explains Luna. “This blush trend throws the winter blues out the window. It’s the season to be drawn to bold, bright colors. Spring is here and summer is just around the corner.”
Makeup artist Jaleesa Jakaran credits beauty influencer Alyssa Janney with helping the look go viral. “It’s really amazing,” she says. “Alyssa Janney, who started this trend, has heavenly skin, so there’s no reason why this trend won’t catch on. For those who already love color and those who are in the era of experimenting. I think people who love beauty have come together.”
Best of all, sunset blush looks beautiful on any skin tone. “Sunset blush is flattering for everyone,” adds Luna. “Use a blush color that matches your tone. This trend is completely customizable for everyone.”
To achieve this look, Jaikaran recommends using a liquid or cream blush like the easy-to-blend pink and orange Elf Camo Liquid Blush. “Draw one dot of each color on her, wherever you want the blush to be. I aim for it right above the cheekbones,” she says. “Use a medium-sized, fluffy brush to blend each color, then tap the cheek to blend it out for a gradated look. Use your fingers to buff the edges without interfering with the rest of your makeup.”

Luna suggests starting with a bright pink blush “close to your temples” and blending it up to about halfway up the apples of your cheeks. “Next, use a coral or orange blush and start where you stopped with the pink blush, blending it into the apples of your cheeks to create an ombré effect,” she says.
For cream blushes, Luna recommends Rare Beauty Soft Pinch Liquid Blush in Lucky and Joy or Live Tinted Huestic Multistick in Free and Rise. For those who prefer powder, we also recommend the Dior Rosy Glow Blush in 001 Pink and 061 Poppy Coral.
We recommend finishing off your look with your favorite highlighter for both Luna and Jaikaran. “For a true sunset glow, apply a golden shimmer blush or highlighter over the blush you’ve already applied, then lightly blend everything to create a seamless gradient sunset,” says Luna, adding that Dior Forever Couture Luminizer Highlighter Powder (04 Golden Glow) and Outshine Rare Beauty Positive Light Liquid Luminizer. Jacaran is a fan of Molten’s Milani Conceal + Protect Liquid She Highlighter.
But don’t be afraid to mix and match your favorite products. This look is meant to be personalized. “I love how this makeup incorporates color, especially now that summer is upon us,” says Jaikaran. “It also allows others to use their makeup as an artist and experiment with tint mixing and color theory.”
