NEW DELHI, DHNS: Following the shock results of the Lok Sabha elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party has decided to make an early move in the upcoming state elections. The party on Monday appointed senior ministers as in-charge of these states. Union ministers Bhupender Yadav and Ashwini Vaishnav have been entrusted with looking after Maharashtra, where the party needs to sort out its relations with allies.
In Haryana, where it lost half the seats it won in 2019, the party appointed Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and former Tripura Chief Minister Bipuran Deb as chief minister. In Jharkhand, it appointed Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, and in Jammu and Kashmir, it appointed Kishan Reddy.
Of these appointees, the party has a tough task in Maharashtra, where the BJP-led Mahayuti Alliance won fewer seats than the India Alliance. Alliance partners have also expressed dissatisfaction in the state, with Ajit Pawar’s faction of the Congress Party choosing not to join the cabinet despite being offered only a ministerial post.
Moreover, Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena faction has openly blamed the BJP for its defeat in the state, whose elections are due in October this year.
In Haryana, the party faced defeat despite a new chief minister. After winning all 10 seats in 2019, the BJP managed to win just five this term and must halt its momentum ahead of the 2024 assembly elections. The party has fielded two strongmen to Jharkhand in the hope of winning the state against the JMM-Congress alliance.
In Jammu and Kashmir, which has faced security challenges recently, the government needs to hold elections by September this year.
