NEW DELHI: Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders, including Union Ministers Amit Shah and Rajnath Singh, met on Monday, a day before the results of the Lok Sabha elections are announced.
They were reportedly assessing the current political situation after exit polls predicted a landslide victory for the BJP-led alliance and the opposition Indian Union in a series of meetings rejected the predictions and stuck to its guns that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government was on the verge of stepping down.
While there was no official announcement from the BJP about the meeting, which was also attended by party president JP Nadda, party leaders reportedly also brainstormed strategies to tackle the opposition.
A BJP delegation approached the Election Commission on Sunday to accuse the Indian National Congress and its allies of trying to undermine the integrity of India’s electoral process and urged the Election Commission to prevent any attempts of “violence and disturbance” during the counting of votes for the June 4 Lok Sabha elections.
The Indian bloc leaders urged the Election Commission to ensure that postal votes are counted and the results made public before the election results are announced, stressing that the Election Commission should issue clear guidelines on the counting process and ensure that it is followed.
