New Delhi:
Votes are being counted today for the world’s largest election. Voting for the Indian Lok Sabha elections took place in seven phases, beginning on April 19 and concluding on June 1. The election is expected to be a fierce battle between the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and the opposition coalition Union of India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is seeking a historic third term, and Union of India is aiming to secure a majority in the Indian House of Representatives by consolidating the seats won by its member parties.
Exit polls have unanimously predicted a significantly improved performance for the NDA in the South.
In Andhra Pradesh, analysts predict the NDA’s alliance with Chandrababu Naidu will bear fruit, winning 18 of the state’s 25 assembly seats.
Similarly, in Karnataka, the BJP is expected to secure a large majority, despite the state’s historical leaning to the Congress. In Telangana, exit polls suggest the Congress may struggle to capitalize on its victory in the last state assembly elections, with the BJP expected to secure more than half of the state’s 17 seats due to a loss for K. Chandrasekhar Rao’s Bharatiya Janata Party.
Additionally, exit polls have predicted that the BJP is likely to make strides in the elections by winning at least two seats in Tamil Nadu and one in Kerala.
