Incident

On Sunday, June 23, a boy, allegedly instigated by his father and uncle, attacked Nazir Hussain Shah, stabbing him multiple times. According to police reports, the boy acted on the allegations of his father and uncle, who are prayer leaders at a Sunni mosque. The father and uncle accused Shah of making derogatory remarks about the Prophet’s Companions. Enraged, the boy retrieved a knife from the house and confronted Shah, fatally wounding him and fleeing.

Legal Action and Arrests

Police launched an investigation after filing a complaint against the minor, his father and uncle following a complaint filed by Shah’s brother, Shabbir Hussain Shah. Pakistan’s leading news agency Dawn described the incident as a sectarian attack and a reflection of rising local tensions.

Escalating violence

This tragic incident is part of a tragic pattern. Just days earlier, on June 20, a mob in Swat district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province lynched a man for allegedly desecrating the Quran. Despite police attempts to detain him, the mob forcibly took the victim away and brutalised him. A video of the incident went viral, sparking widespread outrage.

In another violent incident in May, an elderly Christian man, Nazir Masih, was lynched to death by a mob in Mujahid Colony in Sargodha on unfounded blasphemy charges. The mob looted his property and set him on fire, revealing deep-rooted sectarian tensions.

Government and public reaction

Defense Minister Khawaja Asif acknowledged in parliament that violence against minorities had escalated and condemned routine killings linked to personal vendettas rather than evidence-based allegations of blasphemy.

Dawn reported that recent legislation by the National Assembly condemned mob lynchings and highlighted the ongoing blasphemy charges against more than 2,120 people since 1987. The USCIRF 2023 report detailed intimidation and violence against religious minorities and called for urgent institutional reforms.

The murder of Nazir Hussain Shah highlights the devastating impact of unchecked blasphemy charges in Pakistan. Urgent legal and social reforms are needed to address religious intolerance in Pakistan.
