ATHENS, Ga. — Drew Burress and John Giesler each hit solo home runs to left field in the first inning and Georgia Tech never surrendered the lead and beat Army 4-2 on Saturday in the Athens Regional of the NCAA Tournament.
The Yellow Jackets (32-24) bounced back from a 9-0 blowout loss to the University of North Carolina at Wilmington on Friday to avoid elimination. On Sunday, Georgia Tech will play the loser of Saturday’s game between Georgia and North Carolina-West Virginia.
Georgia Tech extended their lead to 3–0 in the bottom of the fourth inning when Mike Becquetty singled to left-center field, driving in Bobby Zmazuk, who reached base on a walk and advanced to second on a fielder’s choice.
Army (31-23) cut the lead in the bottom of the sixth when Sam Ruta smashed a two-run homer to right field and Chris Barr scored on a single down the middle of the infield.
In the eighth inning, Giesler walked (Army’s fourth walk of the inning) and Cam Jones scored the final run of the game.
Barr had three hits in five at-bats for the Black Knights as their season came to an end.
