Senior Trinamool Congress leader Sushmita Deb alleged that the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) is an “overused political tool and its ‘powerlessness’ has been exposed”.

In an interview with PTI, the Rajya Sabha lawmaker said that many Hindus were excited when the CAA was passed in Parliament, but now people are being asked to produce their passports and “koda pahar nikla chuha”. (Much ado about nothing). Bangladesh school certificate.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, while campaigning for the polls, said that the anti-CAA agitation in Assam was “based on lies” and that those leading it were telling the people He claimed that he would be held responsible.

“After introducing this law, the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Center kept it on hold for four years as an ineffective bill, but now its rules and regulations have made it an almost impossible option (for the people),” the source said. Councilor Silchar said. .

“During the Assam National Register of Citizens (NRC) update, we Bengali Hindus had to prove our Indian identity by submitting Indian school certificates and other documents, but under the CAA. We are being asked to submit documents from Bangladesh,” she said. she insisted.

“The CAA has therefore been left exposed… It is an overreaching political tool and it is not going anywhere,” Deb said.

The CAA Rules were notified on March 11, more than four years after they were enacted on December 11, 2019. The rules aim to grant Indian citizenship to persecuted Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Buddhist, Parsi and Christian migrants from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan. in India before December 31, 2014.

The Toyota MP said rising prices were a key issue in the polls and that the public was “absolutely fed up with the politics of fear and tyranny”.

“You can’t write freely on social media and you can’t raise your voice against the government… Anger and dissatisfaction are growing. Contrary to the findings published so far, the public is satisfied with the current government. “I believe that there is a growing dislocation of people throughout the country,” she argued.

Deb said it would be impossible for the BJP to achieve its target of 400 seats as “the saffron party has reached saturation point”. “They’re creating hype…I don’t think they’ll get past the 200 mark. I hope I’m right, but if I’m not, the country is at risk,” she said. Ta.

He accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of “virtually ending” Bengali Hindus and Muslims in Assam’s southern Barak Valley through neglect, and said the TMC’s slogan was therefore “Let’s fight for dignity”. Stated.

The TMC is contesting four seats in Assam, including Silchar, and the developer claimed that “people are looking for alternatives”.

Deb said that TMC supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had recently addressed a rally in Silchar in support of party candidate Radheshyam Biswas and said that she had a “grave electoral interest” in Assam. He said that he sent a clear message that he had the following.

There is a strong anti-incumbency sentiment against the BJP in the Silchar Lok Sabha seat, where people see the TMC as a new option, he said, representing the seat from 2014 to 2019 until it was defeated in the last election. the former lawmaker argued.
Deb said Silchar has a history of deprivation over the past few decades, with levels varying from the Congress era to the Bharatiya Janata Party era.

She claimed that unemployment, lack of infrastructure and poor connectivity with other parts of Assam and neighboring states have made the two constituencies of Silchar and Karimganj in Barak Valley key polling stations.

Talking about the party’s plans for the 2026 Assam Assembly elections, she said, “In this Lok Sabha polls, only 4 out of 14 seats in the state are contested. I call it a trailer. I don’t want to sound overconfident, but if everything goes well, we aim to give more than half of the total seats to our candidates.” Even Mamata Banerjee said in a meeting, “This. It’s a trailer, wait for the final. That means hoisting the TMC flag in Assam,” Dev claimed.

Assam has a 126-member assembly and the TMC does not have any representation.
