One thing Chicago Bears fans are quickly learning about Caleb Williams is that his personality is nearly the polar opposite of Justin Fields. Fields wasn’t known for his reserved, gregarious personality, but Williams is the exact opposite. He let out a cry of joy when the Bears selected him with the first overall pick in April, and when Rome Odunze was selected ninth an hour later, he took photos with fans and celebrated. Since coming to Chicago, he’s appeared at multiple baseball games, hung out with fans at local bars and fueled “Green Bay sucks” chants.
There’s something else he’s been doing since the moment he arrived that fans will likely miss, too busy watching highlights from his college days, practice footage and various quotes on his progress. Williams remains the same throughout his press conference, and doesn’t seem uncomfortable answering questions. He’s honest, thoughtful and doesn’t seem afraid to criticize his teammates when necessary. But the best part is at the end. Once the questions are over, Williams stands up and says the same line as he always does before leaving:
Caleb Williams is certainly keen.
Name the last quarterback who does this after a press conference. Don’t bother. You’ll never find someone like that. Many college officials say Williams has a bit of a unique personality. He’s comfortable in his shape and brings relentless positivity to everything he does. Is it a bit embarrassing to say “Da Bears” after every press conference? Yes, it is. Does Williams care? Of course not. He’s going to let everyone know he’s 100% committed to this organization, including its proud history.
Some of you may look shocked, but don’t worry. Bears fans will want this. Fields has worked so hard to become the franchise quarterback this organization wants, but it never felt like he embraced the organization’s identity. That’s not his fault. It’s his personality. Caleb Williams is not. He wants to embrace the culture of the organization from top to bottom, and that includes the iconic quote. Rest assured, if he starts winning games, Bears fans will be yelling those words every time he steps onto the sidewalk.
