If you thought 2000s fashion was over, think again. Most of the trends from the 2000s have made a comeback, and now the younger generation is looking to them for beauty inspiration. The latest fad is the “triple hair” trend, where the worst hairstyles of those born in the 1980s and 1990s have come to the fore again as the star trend of the summer.
What do Jennifer Aniston, Christina Aguilera, Kelly Clarkson, and Nicole Richie have in common? They’re all celebrities, but more than that, they all succumbed to the calico craze in the 2000s. Calico is a hair color trend the world could do without, but it’s been a staple choice for a long time.
Then the hairstyle was forgotten in favor of more modern techniques and more subtle shades, but thanks to Gen Z’s obsession with the 2000s, this unusual, if not questionable, trend for hair highlights is back again.
What is the calico hair style that has made a comeback as a trend from the 2000s?
For those who don’t know, calico is a combination of brown, blonde and red stripes with highlights. It is a style in which calico hair has spots of the same shade in prominent areas. In fact, this coloring requires thick highlights on wide strands of hair, rather than delicate highlights on thin strands. The result can only be described as original.
Since the early 2020s, the triple-knit hairstyle has been in fashion several times, but never caught on in its original form. Some celebrities, such as Bella Hadid and Dua Lipa, have embraced the triple-knit look, but they were content with a combination of two colors that framed the hair (two bangs) and created a contrast with the rest of the hair. Four years later, the cult hairstyle of the 2000s seems to be making a bigger comeback, as evidenced by Miley Cyrus at the recent Grammy Awards (albeit in a more subdued version).
And this is just the beginning of what may become the go-to hair color of summer 2024. One only has to look at TikTok to quickly see that calico has already gained a huge following with over 20 million posts. It doesn’t matter what hairstyle you have: short, long, straight or curly, because young people are giving free rein to their imagination and desires when it comes to mainstream colors and effects.
According to Pinterest’s Summer 2024 Trends Report, this trend is likely to grow at a rapid clip, with searches for “calico” predicted to increase by 6,500% and searches for thick 2000s highlights by 5,400% between April 2023 and April 2024. The social network also reported a 2,840% increase in search interest in getting dark highlights on dark hair. It looks like the season for indulgence is finally upon us.
