A Karachi University (KU) campus bus rammed into a second-year student, killing him on Friday morning.

Students present on site said the driver reversed into Aniqa Saeed, who died on the spot hit by the rear wheel. Campus emergency staff and police reached the site immediately.

Aniqa, a sociology student, was shifted to a hospital for medico-legal formalities. Mobina Town Police said they arrested the bus driver but the deceased’s family has declined to pursue legal action. A detailed report is being prepared, added police.

As news spread, students rallied in protest demanding justice and action againt the errant driver as well as the campus administration.

They called for effective traffic control measures to be introduced on campus to prevent similar accidents in the future. The students denounced the absence of a clear traffic management system on campus and observed that there were no speedbreakers or warning signs across campus.

The protestors also demanded financial support for the bereaved family.

“Today’s incident is extremely tragic. We have lost one of our daughters, and a full investigation will be conducted,” said Karachi University Vice-Chancellor Dr Khalid Iraqi, addressing the protesters.

The university administration is in contact with Aniqa’s family and will cooperate with whatever course of action they wish to pursue, added the VC.
