Cam Thomas is one of the Brooklyn Nets’ most promising players. When assessing the progress of other young prospects on the American team in the league, Thomas undoubtedly stands out as a player who could soon represent the red, white and blue on basketball’s most competitive global stage.
Thomas has established himself as the NBA’s leading scorer over 190 games played over three seasons. He has started 57 of those games, so if the U.S. decides to use him off the bench, he should be able to make the most of his minutes, just as he did off the bench in Brooklyn.
If the Nets’ rising star maintains his current form, he could lock down a spot to play for the United States at the FIBA World Cup in 2027.
The U.S. has struggled at this tournament for a while, last winning all the way back in 2014. The U.S. also failed to finish in the top three in 2019 and the most recent tournament in 2023.
Nets forward Cam Johnson contributed to the disaster at the 2023 World Cup. If the U.S. team had finished at least second, it would not have been considered a disappointment given the success the U.S. had in the tournament.
Germany deserves some credit for thumping the U.S. in the semifinals, but the U.S. is a team determined not to finish any lower than first place and will need all the help it can get at the next World Cup. Thomas could be just that help.
