A TikTok video shows a simple way to monitor your hydration levels, and it’s considered “totally legal.”

“Check for dehydration!” he says. “If you squeeze this area with your fingertips and go back down, you’re hydrated.”

This trick is an easy way to test your hydration levels and is backed by science.

According to Medline Plus, you can try this check by pinching the back of your hand, your abdomen, or the skin in front of your chest just below your collarbone.

If your skin doesn’t return to its normal position quickly, drink water.

In contrast, if the skin is difficult to pinch, it may be a sign of edema. This means your body is holding on to a lot of fluid and is swollen.
