Four people were killed and nine injured after a car crashed into a nail salon on Long Island on Friday, authorities said.
Suffolk County police said in a statement Saturday that Steven Schwalli, 64, was driving a southbound Chevrolet Traverse at a high rate of speed through a parking lot in Deer Park around 4:30 p.m. when the car crossed the road and went into another parking lot, then crashed through the windshield of Hawaii Nail & Spa.
Authorities say the vehicle crashed almost into the back of the nail salon.
Three women and one man were pronounced dead at the scene.
One of the victims was identified Saturday as an off-duty NYPD officer, Officer Emilia Lenhack, 30, who was assigned to the 102nd Precinct, according to WABC in New York.
“The NYPD mourns the loss of @NYPD102Pct Officer Emilia Renhack,” the police department said in a statement on X. “She tragically passed away yesterday while off duty on Long Island. Please keep her family, friends and colleagues in your thoughts. Rest in Peace.”
Nine people, including the driver, were taken to a nearby hospital.
Schwary, who lives in Dix Hills, Long Island, was “partially conscious” after the accident and was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Police said Saturday that the suspect was charged with drunk driving and will stand trial at a later date.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams on Saturday offered his “deep condolences and prayers” to Officer Lenn Hack’s family and loved ones.
“No matter the circumstances, it’s never easy to receive news of the loss of a dedicated public servant,” Adams said. In X’s post.
Suffolk County police detectives are urging anyone with information about the crash to contact the department’s Major Incident Unit.
