“The Breakfast Club” host and political commentator Charlemagne the God While he is no fan of Trump, he praised the former president for “killing the language of politics.”
Speaking with CNN host Michael Smerconish on Saturday, the popular liberal host, who recently declined to endorse President Biden but is a Democrat himself, said Trump’s ability to break with elitist conventions and speak directly to his supporters is admirable.
“One of the things that I think is a good thing that Donald Trump has done is he killed the language of politics,” Charmagne asserted.

Smerconish brought up the topic while speaking with Charmagne about his new book, “Get Honest Or Die Lying,” and his observation that mainstream politicians often behave one way in private conversations with him, but become different people in front of a “hot mic.”
Smerconish noted that this is not the case with Trump, and Charmagne agreed, praising the former president for this quality.

“The language of politics is all but dead” because of Trump, Charmagne said, “so if we had politicians who actually engaged and spoke to ordinary working-class people, I’d be able to do that every morning on The Breakfast Club.”
He added: “When you actually talk to people and you know what’s on people’s minds, that’s always on your mind when you’re in front of a microphone. What people are actually saying is always on your mind.”
“You know, our elected officials need to sit down and talk to individuals more,” he said, noting that their speeches and rallies should be held in a town hall format so they can talk to people.

Elsewhere in the interview, Charmagne expressed frustration with the Democratic Party and mainstream media’s messaging about Trump, saying it’s having no impact on the former president’s base.
“Spending all day on TV or on social media talking about how bad Trump is isn’t going to work,” he asserted.
“The people who support Trump don’t care about that. They don’t care that he was convicted. They don’t care that he may have used the N-word. They don’t care about his racism or sexism. They all support Trump and nothing can change that.”
For this reason, he advised the media to pivot from focusing on Trump to talking about the strengths of the Biden campaign.
Smerconish then asked Charmagne whether he thought Trump’s recent 34-count conviction “would change the outcome of the election.”
Charlaman said the verdict would give Trump’s supporters “something to fight for” and galvanize his base.
