Minnesota Lynx head coach Sheryl Reeve will lead the U.S. women’s basketball team as head coach at the Paris Olympics.
MINNEAPOLIS — Cheryl Reeve is no longer in the passenger seat, but she does have the car keys.
She will lead Team USA Women’s Basketball at the Paris Olympics this summer.
“I’m really excited,” Reeve said. “It still doesn’t seem real. I can’t even believe it. Is this really happening? I understand that USA Basketball has a storied past, a dynastic past. But , we haven’t all been on that journey together. This is our journey.”
Reeve is a six-time WNBA champion, so his pedigree is solid.
Reggie: “Did you feel any pressure? I mean, you were very successful in this match.”
Cheryl: “Well, if any of you know me, you’d think there’s no pressure, of course. But if you know me, the pressure that I put on myself has been a part of my life, for better or worse, and you’d know I have high expectations, and I’m going to work my tail off to make sure I’m in the best position to contribute to the team as much as I can.”
Her journey at the helm began at a time when the sport was at an all-time high. Her NCAA Women’s National Championship in April became the most-watched game in women’s basketball history, with 24 million viewers. This is a 285% increase from 2022.
“We’ve seen these personalities and players become famous while also being great players and finding a way to put that together and building on that momentum,” Reeve said. Ta.
The lineup has not yet been determined, but Reeve may be joined by Lynx superstar Napheesa Collier.
Reggie: “Fee should be part of this team, what are your expectations?”
Cheryl: “Well, with Fee, we saw it in the Olympic qualifying tournament in February, she can come in and be a reliable player who can do whatever it takes. She’s very good. Even on set. And, you know, Fee’s been a part of that, we’ve been in the trenches together. We’ve been through the growth together. We have a chance to achieve that with the national team, and we’re going to rely on each other and strive for the gold medal. I’m sure she’s ready for that moment.”
Reeve served as an assistant on the past two Olympic gold medal teams and led the women’s team to a gold medal in 2022 as head coach of the FIBA World Championship team.
However, this ride is a little different.
“I think about it as an assistant, there were moments where I thought, ‘I wonder how Dawn (Staley) is feeling right now,'” Reeve said. “I wonder how Geno is feeling? When you put your all into something, it’s not about that moment. I think it’s going to feel like you’ve been on a basketball journey since you were in the seventh grade and you’re going to reach the pinnacle and that’s what it’s all about. It’s going to be very, very exciting.”
