The Cheyenne Police Department’s Crime Prevention Team (CPT) is warning residents about a trend of targeting Kia vehicles in the South Cheyenne area.
In what appears to be a nationwide problem, the techniques for stealing these cars have been spread via social media, and a security flaw allows certain models to be started even without the owner’s original key.
In Cheyenne, most cases involve vehicle windows being damaged and engines failing to start.
Kia dealers are implementing software and mechanical updates to prevent such thefts, and customers can call to find out if their cars are eligible for repairs.
Once the updates are complete, technicians will apply an anti-theft window sticker to deter future crimes.
To further address this issue, police are increasing patrols in high-risk areas and working closely with local residents to identify and apprehend suspects.
CPT is urging the public to offer the following tips to help prevent vehicle theft:
- Whenever possible, park in a well-lit, well-traveled area.
- Store valuables safely: Keep valuables out of sight to avoid drawing attention to yourself. Remove personal items such as electronic devices, wallets, firearms, etc.
- Keep your doors locked: Always lock your car doors and keep the windows closed, even when your car is parked at home.
- Install security cameras: Video evidence can be valuable in these investigations. Place cameras in locations that can capture parked vehicles, and store and keep your video recordings up to date.
- If you notice any suspicious activity, please report it to us at (307) 637-6525.
In 2023, CPT was established to enhance public safety in the community.
This specialised team of officers will work closely with members of the public to identify the root causes of crime and develop solutions.
In 2024, the team will continue to utilize crime intelligence, public education and Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) strategies to deter criminal activity.
