Two people were killed and 10 others injured in a knife attack at an elementary school in southern China’s Jiangxi province, police said.
It was not immediately clear whether children were among the victims.
The attack occurred around noon (4 p.m. Japan time) at a school in the city of Guizai.
Police said a 45-year-old woman carried out the attack using a paring knife. She has since been taken into custody, police added in a statement on social media.
Parents at the school described their shock and horror when they heard the attack had occurred.
“I received the news at noon and was absolutely shocked,” one person told the BBC on condition of anonymity. “My child is in the fifth grade and is still young, so he returned home safely, but he did not hear from the school.” In order to comfort him, he did not tell us anything and hid everything. And I’m going to go back to find out what exactly happened. ”
Another father, who also wished to remain anonymous, said: “Of course we are scared too. It’s not just the children, even us adults are very scared.”
