Autonomous driving is no longer a dream of the future, but is becoming a reality today. Tesla TSLA and Alphabet’s Waymo are making great strides in the technological revolution, with Chinese automakers poised to put self-driving cars on the roads.

China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology recently approved a list of nine domestic automakers to begin testing autonomous vehicles (AVs) on select roads in the country, marking a major milestone in the evolution of transportation.

A new chapter in autonomous driving

Chinese regulators have approved nine automakers, including major manufacturers such as: BYD Co., Ltd.. BYDDY and NIO Corporation The initiative is groundbreaking as it is the first time that Chinese authorities have allowed the testing of Level 3 (L3) and Level 4 (L4) autonomous driving capabilities. Unlike assisted driving, these levels allow vehicles to make informed driving decisions with minimal human intervention, ushering in a new era of autonomous driving technology.

BYD and NIO take the lead

BYD and NIO are pioneers in this ambitious program. With the green light from Chinese regulators, the companies can now test Level 3 and Level 4 autonomous vehicles in approved areas of major cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen. The approval is seen as a pivotal moment that could accelerate the application and integration of advanced driving technologies. BYD in particular highlighted the importance of this regulatory milestone, emphasizing that being able to test Level 3 technology is a key starting point for autonomous driving.

BYDDY has a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy), while NIO has a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). You can see the complete list of today’s Zacks #1 Rank (Strong Buy) stocks here.

Interestingly, some of the pioneers of self-driving technology, such as Tesla, XPeng Corporation XPEV and Huawei are not on the list. Tesla’s fully self-driving technology has not yet been approved in China, indicating strict regulatory standards or strategic priorities in the country. Similarly, XPeng and Huawei-backed Seres are not on the list despite their progress, highlighting the competitive and selective nature of this regulatory approval process.

China’s Innovation and Safety Efforts

As part of the approval process, selected companies will be required to detail their testing plans and safety evaluation methods as part of the temporary permit application process, ensuring that the introduction of self-driving cars on public roads is safe and properly regulated.

China’s strategy to promote the popularization of autonomous vehicles also focuses on strengthening the integration of intelligent connected car systems with existing road infrastructure. Authorized companies will conduct tests on public roads, providing valuable data and insights that will help shape future regulations and national standards for autonomous vehicles.

Steering towards an autonomous future

The approval of autonomous vehicle testing in China marks a major step forward in the global race towards self-driving technology. By allowing nine domestic automakers to test Level 3 and Level 4 technology, China is not only improving its technological capabilities, but also preparing for a future in which intelligent, connected cars are a common sight on the roads.
