MWC Shanghai 2024 Live Stream: Chen Zhongyue, Chairman of China Unicom (photograph) outlined its vision to emerge as a true technology services company by combining new AI-powered computing capabilities with its strengths as a communications service provider forging new partnerships.
“Through joint development projects and collaboration with industry players, we hope to continue to innovate not only in computing with AI technology, but also on the network side,” he explained.
Chen noted that while broadband service penetration grew by just 2.3 percent last year after peaking at about 30 percent growth in 2014, revenue from intelligent data services has been surging, even though it still accounts for a small portion of total revenue.
He encouraged telecom operators to work together to develop new ways to restore growth in telecom services.
He said China Unicom is pushing ahead with the implementation of the open gateway initiative in China to “accelerate the power of 5G this year.” The company is working on an open gateway deployment action plan to develop industry best practices and expand the application of open platforms.
The company also recently unveiled its 5G-Advanced roadmap, which aims to enhance network capabilities to enable more industries to benefit from 5G technology.
