The first swimming medals of the 2024 Olympic Games were awarded, with China winning the gold medal in the women’s three-meter synchronized diving. Prior to this, China also won its first gold medal of the same Olympic Games in the mixed team air rifle shooting.
In diving, the Chinese pair of Zhang Yani and Chen Yiwen dived with a final score of 337.68, leading the entire competition with 52.80 points in the first round. Their best score came in the fourth round, when they earned 79.98 points.
The silver medal went to the American pair Sarah Bacon and Cassidy Cook with a final score of 314.64. The pair were in third place after the first round, but moved up to second place and maintained that position for the rest of the rounds.
Great Britain’s Yasmin Harper and Scarlett Mew-Jensen won the bronze medal with 302.28 points, having been in sixth place after the third round but improving with two strong final dives.
Chang and Chen had won the past three world championships together and came into the tournament as favorites to win.
The pair continued China’s history of strength in diving. Notably, at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the Chinese women won gold medals in all four events, while the men won three out of four events. In addition to winning all four gold medals, the Chinese women also won two silver medals.
Swimming will begin with medal presentation tonight at 2:30pm EST with four finals: the men’s and women’s 400 meter freestyle and the men’s and women’s 4×100 meter freestyle relay.
