China’s Unexpected Pluralism: A Thai Muslim Perspective on Shanghai and Hangzhou

As a Thai Muslim, I recently embarked on a week-long trip to Shanghai and Hangzhou, China. While researching the trip, I wasn’t sure what to expect in terms of Muslim communities or Halal options. After all, China isn’t necessarily the first place that comes to mind for Muslim travelers. However, my experience painted a very different picture, revealing a surprising level of “Chinese pluralism” that overturned my initial assumptions.

Exploring the financial capital: Shanghai

Shanghai is bustling with activity. This financial hub attracts a diverse population, evident in the many dialects spoken and the mix of young and old chasing their dreams. Shanghai is home to prestigious universities, including Fudan University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University, further cementing its reputation as a hub for innovation.

What surprised me most was how easily it was possible to find a Halal restaurant. There was an excellent restaurant near my hotel that served delicious Xinjiang cuisine, a testament to the culinary diversity of China. I was greeted by the warm aroma of sizzling lamb skewers and handmade noodles as I walked into the beautifully decorated restaurant. My taste buds were flooded with familiarity as I tasted biryani, a Muslim dish with a delicious combination of rice, lamb and vegetables. The experience highlighted the striking similarities between Chinese and Thai cuisine, especially in the northwestern region.

Beyond Food: Meeting the Muslim Community

My exploration of Shanghai was not limited to just the foodie scene. I was fortunate to discover historic mosques such as Xiaotaoyuan, built in 1917, and Foyou Road Mosque, which dates back to the Qing Dynasty. These architectural marvels display Islamic influences, with Xiaotaoyuan housing various Islamic communities and Foyou Road reflecting traditional Chinese palace style. Witnessing these vibrant Muslim communities thriving in the heart of Shanghai offered a glimpse into the city’s rich diversity.

Travel to Hangzhou: An Oriental Paradise

A short bullet train journey took me to Hangzhou, famous for its picturesque landscapes and West Lake. Home to tech giants like Alibaba and the prestigious Zhejiang University, Hangzhou exudes a unique atmosphere where innovation meets natural tranquility. A focus on health and wellness permeates the city, a philosophy that resonated deeply with me.

Hidden gems: Halal food and ancient mosques

Hangzhou reveals another side of Chinese pluralism with its historic mosques. The Phoenix Temple, believed to date back to the Tang or Song dynasty, stands as a testament to the city’s long Islamic tradition. The relatively new Hangzhou Mosque is a testament to the growing Muslim population and offers a magnificent spectacle of Islamic architecture.

My quest for Halal food led me to a charming restaurant near the mosque, where I was treated to a variety of Northwestern specialities, further broadening my culinary horizons. The distinct flavors and preparations of Ningxia, Xinjiang, Gansu and Qinghai cuisines provided a delightful opportunity to explore China’s diverse regional cuisines.

Conclusion

My first impression of China was that of a single nation. However, exploring Shanghai and Hangzhou revealed a surprising diversity. From the ease of finding halal food to vibrant Muslim communities and historic mosques, I was truly impressed by China’s ability to accommodate its diverse population. This unexpected openness makes China a strong contender for the title of Muslim-friendly travel destination, offering a unique combination of cultural experiences and culinary delights.
