New Orleans – Louisiana State University gymnastics head coach Jay Clark and senior Haley Bryant have been named finalists for the 2023-24 Louisiana University Coach of the Year and James J. Corbett Awards, announced Monday at the Allstate Sugar Bowl.

The Corbett Award, awarded since 1967, recognizes the top male and female amateur athletes in Louisiana. The Top College Coach Award has been presented since 1961. Both awards are selected by the New Orleans Sports Awards Committee.

The College Coaches Award winners, selected by the committee, will be announced on Friday, June 28th, the female Corbett Award winner will be announced on Monday, July 8th and the male winner will be announced the following day, July 9th.

The LSU gymnastics team has produced multiple Corbett Award winners in the program’s history, including Susan Jackson (2009-2010), Ashley Nutt (2016-17) and Sarah Finnegan (2018-19), while former coach D.D. Breaux was the 2017 and 2019 Louisiana Collegiate Coach of the Year.

Additionally, fans can visit the Allstate Sugar Bowl website to choose their own favorite team in the state. Voting will close on Friday, June 21. Fan choices will be announced at the same time as the committee’s official selection.

The New Orleans Sports Awards Committee began in 1957 when James Collins led a group of sports journalists to form the Sports Awards Committee to immortalize the history of local sports. For 13 years, the committee recognized local athletes monthly. In 1970, the Sugar Bowl sponsored and revitalized the committee, and in 1971, the Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame was established, honoring 10 legends from the Crescent City in its first induction class. While taking on the added responsibility of selecting inductees, the committee continues to recognize the top amateur athletes in the Greater New Orleans area each month, marking its 68th year in 2021. To be eligible, athletes must be from the Greater New Orleans area or compete for a team in the metropolitan area.
