A Central Michigan University student majoring in applied statistics and analytics has landed an internship with a Tennessee-based silicone and polymer technology company.
Harshavardhan Reddy, of Mount Pleasant, who will graduate in December, is doing an internship at Wacker Chemical Company in Charleston, Tennessee.
Wacker is a pioneer in silicon and polymer technologies and a leading provider of polysilicon for the semiconductor and photovoltaic industries, as well as an innovator in biotechnology applications for food/nutritional and pharmaceutical.
Wacker spokesman James Burns said company executives have been working with the company’s human resources department to select the summer interns and arrange for them to be assigned to the company’s Charleston facility.
As part of their training, interns receive coaching and mentoring while working on projects and initiatives that contribute to the company and help interns like Reddy gain practical industry experience.
The internship program began in May with a comprehensive orientation and Reddy will remain with Wacker until early August.
Burns said interns will be compensated based on their relevant qualifications and academic progress, and will work on cutting-edge research and development while benefiting from the Charleston campus’ state-of-the-art facilities.
Burns said the Charleston plant is one of Wacker’s most modern ultra-high purity polysilicon production facilities in the world, and the roughly $2.5 billion investment marks the company’s largest single investment in history.
“We are pleased to welcome Harshavardhan Reddy to our team,” said Ato Taylor, Senior Director of Human Resources. “Our internship program provides valuable hands-on experience and mentorship to the next generation of innovators.”
This opportunity allows interns to apply their academic knowledge in a real-world setting and bring fresh perspectives and ideas to our projects.”
To demonstrate what they have learned, interns will showcase their summer projects and contributions in an internal panel presentation upon the conclusion of their internship in August.
