Mike Ross of West Boylston and Jensen Shipp of Sutton High School were named Coach of the Year for the boys and girls teams, respectively, during the Central Mass High School Sports Awards on Wednesday, June 26, at the Hanover Theatre.
Other boys finalists were Tim Caouette of Oakmont Regional baseball and Al Pettway of North basketball. Other girls finalists were Roger Anderson of Westboro volleyball and Kelly Rosborough of Uxbridge field hockey.
“Ross has proven over the years that with a good strategy and tough players, you can build a football team that can win against any team. He led West Boylston to back-to-back Super Bowl wins and the Lions finished a 13-0 season with a win over Carver at Gillette Stadium and won the Division 8 state championship after winning the Division 7 title last year. This is an impressive accomplishment, as Ross has won Super Bowl titles at North High, Grafton High and West Boylston.”
Shipp led Sutton to its third consecutive girls state soccer championship, with the Susies defeating top-seeded South Hadley, 2-1, in the Division 4 state finals. Sutton finished the season with 17 wins, 4 losses and 2 ties, winning 11 state championships in school history under Coach Shipp, including Division 5 championships in 2021 and 2022, and Sutton has established itself as a top-ranked soccer program in the state each year.
