Virginia Tech signed quarterback Colin Schley (6-3, 225, Sr.), a transfer from UCLA, on Tuesday night. He has one year of eligibility left. He will strengthen the quarterback room behind Kyron Drones. It will strengthen a quarterback room that only had redshirt freshman Pop Watson and true freshman Davi Belfort after Dylan Witke left via the portal after the spring.

Schley is a Maryland native who signed with Kent State University out of high school. He earned the starting quarterback spot for the 2022 season, completing 59 percent of his passes for 2,109 yards, 13 touchdowns, and five interceptions. He transferred to UCLA in 2023 and appeared in seven games for the Bruins. Although he didn’t play much as a passer, he gained 425 rushing yards on just 42 carries.

In addition to his overall experience level, what makes Schley a good fit for Virginia Tech’s offense is his feet. He gained 1,126 rushing yards on 172 carries in his collegiate career, averaging 6.5 yards per carry and scoring 11 touchdowns. Similar to Draughn from a size/skill standpoint, if something were to happen to Tech’s starters, the offense wouldn’t have to change much if Schley could beat out Watson for the backup job.

Schley also visited Kentucky, but ultimately chose the Hokies over the Wildcats.
