In 2023, Farmington River businesses such as Collinsville Canoe & Kayak were rained out over the weekend.

CANTON, Conn. — Collinsville Canoe & Kayak, which operates on the Farmington River, lost 23 weekends of operation in 2023 due to rain cancellations, but as it prepares for Memorial Day weekend, the early outlook is bright.

“We have a lot of people coming out and enjoying the river. It’s shaping up to be a great weekend,” said Sue Warner, owner of Collinsville Canoe & Kayak, a family-owned business that began more than 30 years ago.

“It’s fun for us to get people back out and out on the water,” she said.

John Warner, Sue’s wife and partner in the family-run business, said the business, which rents out a range of personal watercraft, had been busy last week.

“People are out on their bikes, people are out on the trails, the water temperature is finally 60 degrees and it’s time to paddle,” John Warner said.

“You can go solo kayaking, tandem kayaking, canoeing, stand up paddle boarding or even take a stand up paddle board yoga class,” added Sue Warner.

In the coming weeks and months, the Warners expect to see some new faces on the dock and inside the store.

“You can’t beat the view with the trees and the wildlife. It’s just so beautiful,” John Warner said.

“It’s great to see people outside enjoying themselves and at the moment it should stay busy well into the autumn,” Sue Warner said.
