Temperatures are starting to drop in Kern heading into next week, with Bakersfield expected to remain above 100 degrees all next week before dropping to a low of 101 degrees on Wednesday.
Bakersfield’s high temperature on Sunday was 103 degrees and its low was 77. Similar temperatures are expected in the Valley on Monday. Temperatures in Kern on Monday are expected to reach a high of 108 degrees in the desert and a low of 89 degrees in the mountains. The high temperature in the Kern River Valley will be 99 degrees.
While the extreme heat warning has been lifted across the county, a red flag warning remains in effect for areas of the southern Sierra Nevada until 9pm Sunday, and there is a 20-30% chance of thunderstorms, including dry thunderstorms, in these areas Sunday afternoon and evening.
Dry thunderstorms can spark wildfires, which can spread quickly when humidity rises to 15% and thunderstorm overflows bring erratic wind gusts of 40-50 mph.
Additionally, due to expected excessive rainfall, a Flood Watch has been issued for parts of eastern Kern until 7:15 PM Sunday. This applies to areas near California City. The primary impacts will be flooded roads and rising streams. If you encounter flooded roads, do not drive through them. Witnessed flooding can be reported to local police or emergency services.
Air quality on Monday was 136, considered unhealthy for sensitive groups.
Enjoy the upcoming week of slightly cooler weather!
