Jacksonville, Florida – Community members are helping the owner of a local daycare center repair the building and clean up debris after a powerful storm earlier this month caused extensive damage to the building.

The windows, roof, ramps and entrances of Dreams Come True Learning Center in Lakeshore need repairs after the impact of the limbs distorted the building, said owner Brendreka Leach.

“Lightning struck that tree over there. After the lightning struck I heard a gust of wind and the next thing I knew I heard a loud explosion and the tree hit a big branch that hit the top of the roof and another branch went through the window,” Leach said.

Leach said the damage has had a negative impact on her business.

“It’s so terrible. It’s a tremendous loss, a really big loss… I can’t go to my local utility company or whatever and say, ‘Oh, this is what happened with the storm and I can’t pay my bills,’ and they’re not going to understand that because of this situation, I don’t have enough kids at my center,” Leach said.

Now, members of the community have come to help Leach clear away debris and make minor repairs.

“This is my heart. This is everything to me, so I just want my business back,” Leach said.
