Congress candidate in Odisha’s Puri seeks donations for election

BHUBANESWAR: Congress candidate Sucharita Mohanty from Prilok Sabha seat solicited donations to fight elections and asked for money by sharing UPI QR codes on her social media handles. Mohanty said she was forced to solicit donors because the cash-strapped council’s bank accounts had already been frozen.

While candidates from independent or fringe parties are usually seen seeking donations, Mohanty is likely the first candidate from a national party to seek donors to contest the upcoming elections in the state.

“Depleted in resources and facing restrictions on bank accounts, the Congress has given zero funding to carry out poll activities. I am a salaried woman with limited resources of my own to mount a successful campaign to defeat corruption and campaign fraudsters,” she said from her seat in Puri in 2014. said Mohanty, who ran unsuccessfully.

Mohanty, a journalist, said monetary donations, big or small, would help accelerate campaigning and encourage good governance. She said her lack of funds alone could stand between her and a victory at Puri.

Mohanty will fight against BJD’s Arup Patnaik and BJP’s Sambit Patra in Puri, where polls will be held on May 25.

In March, before announcing candidates for the elections, the Congress had sought a deposit of Rs 50,000 from each shortlisted candidate to provide election materials. To a question whether he had also deposited the amount, Mohanty said the practice was adopted only for parliamentary candidates and not for parliamentary candidates. In October 2019, the Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee appealed to the people and party workers for donations to meet the costs of the Bijepur assembly by-election.
