For the U.S. Men’s National Team, Monday’s Copa America showdown against Uruguay will be the most important game the team has played under coach Gregg Berhalter. For Uruguay, it’s a Monday.

Indeed, Uruguay, a small nation turned soccer power, needs to win or draw against the U.S. to win Group C and set a quarterfinal spot, but the U.S. men’s national team has shown no signs of being at the same level as La Celeste, which has dominated its two group stage matches so far, beating Bolivia 5-0 and Panama 3-1.

The U.S. opened the tournament with a 2-0 win over Bolivia, arguably the weakest team competing in the 2024 Copa America, but lost 2-1 to Panama, who played with 10 men after Tim Weah received a red card for a silly foul early in the game.

Weah’s ejection makes things even tougher for the USMNT. Weah has served a two-game suspension and will miss Monday’s match. That means the USMNT essentially faces a must-win situation against Uruguay to advance to the quarterfinals. If they earn less than three points on Monday night, the U.S. will have to rely on doing better than Panama in their simultaneous match against Bolivia. The U.S. has a chance, though unlikely, to stay in the tournament.

In the months between U.S. men’s national team games, when his job is less pressured and practical, his meticulous mind obsesses over details and possibilities. He spent the long summer before the 2022 World Cup analyzing group-stage opponents. He likely spent a good part of this spring crafting a game plan for the 2024 Copa America.

    But he could not have been prepared for a crucial Group C match, with a chaotic scenario, a suspended star player, an injured goalkeeper and an opponent with the absence of an influential coach and unclear motives.

    The assumption here is that the U.S. will stick with the standard 4-3-3, with Gio Reyna pushed out to the wing and Christian Pulisic playing more vertically than usual.

    But I don’t think that will work, nor do I think the U.S. will actually do it. As always, using numbers to describe a formation oversimplifies it. I think they’ll go with something more fluid, like a 4-2-2-2, with Reina and Weston McKennie as the second of three “2s.”

    The parking lot before the match had a lively atmosphere, with many Uruguay fans, but perhaps a few more American fans.

    Early indications and Ticketmaster suggest there will be plenty of empty seats in the upper levels of Arrowhead Stadium, but this could be the largest Copa America crowd ever for the U.S. men’s national team.
