Copa America: Mexico vs Jamaica live updates, scores, highlights, El Tri captain Edson Alvarez injured

Group B play for Copa America 2024 is underway, with Venezuela beating Ecuador 2-1 in Santa Clara, California, in an early Saturday morning match and Mexico taking on Jamaica at NRG Stadium in Houston on Saturday night.

Mexico enters the tournament as the No. 1 team in the CONCACAF rankings. The United States is No. 2 and will open the tournament on Sunday against Bolivia, while Jamaica is ranked No. 5. El Tri most recently won the CONCACAF Gold Cup in the United States in 2023.

A scoreless first half on Saturday saw both teams come close to scoring but were thwarted. Mexico suffered a major loss when Edson Alvarez suffered a non-contact leg injury in the 27th minute. Losing their captain and arguably one of their best players was a major blow and put El Tri’s hopes of progressing further in the tournament in jeopardy.

With Luis Romo replacing Alvarez, Mexico never looked completely defeated after losing their captain, and Jamaica outshot Mexico 8-7 and looked dangerous on offense.

  • Goal Mexico!

    Gerardo Arteaga took the shot with the cleanest first touch possible and smashed it into the side netting from 20 yards out.

    That’s a great goal.

    Fans were excited.

    A shower of celebratory beer falls all around.

    It was coming!

    For Mexico, Guillermo Martinez replaced Santiago Jimenez and Carlos Rodriguez replaced Orbelin Pineda, while for Jamaica, Damion Lowe replaced Demarai Gray and Michael Hector replaced Dishon Bernard.

  • And another chance for Mexico!

    This time it was Jimenez who played the pass. He found the charging forward Julián Quiñones. Quiñones took two excellent touches inside the box, but the Jamaican defender recovered and made a superb final block.

    This is probably the best chance we have had so far in this match.

  • Mexico Chance!

    Santi Jimenez was energized, he lowered his shoulders, did everything right and fired a shot with his right foot into the top of the net.

    However, Jamaican goalkeeper Jamali Waite reacted extremely well, catching the ball with both hands.

  • That iconic sequence from earlier…

    Mexico played well defensively, taking some of the pressure off Jamaica, and the fans started chanting “Ole!”

    However, as they tried to advance through the wing to the last line, a simple passing error thwarted their attacking move.

  • Jamaica looks dangerous on attack

    The game opened up a little more and Jamaica started to find ways to counter-attack, something they hadn’t done in the first half.

    It feels like a goal is approaching, the question is, which goal?

  • Now Mexico is crying out for penalties…

    A Jamaican player appeared to block a shot at the top of the box with his back arm.

    However, the referee ordered play to continue and VAR refused to intervene.

    Michail Antonio was ruled offside.

    Michail Antonio scored from a free header behind the post, although he was unmarked, which may have been because he was offside.

    After a VAR check, the goal was disallowed.

    But Mexico has been unstable, and Jamaica has started the second half well.

    Jamaica had the first chance in the first minute of the second half, when Mexico goalkeeper Julio Gonzalez deflected what looked like an easy shot.

    The happier of the two teams is probably Venezuela, who beat Ecuador 2-1 earlier this evening and are currently the favourites to win the group.

    So far so good. El Tri has great defensive transitions, and Jamaica (partly due to their own sloppiness) can’t get the ball out of the way.

    But right now, neither team has enough offensive firepower to create meaningful chances.

    Halftime is approaching and it’s still 0-0.

  • Alvarez’s departure is a big loss for Mexico

    When Alvarez reached the sideline, the entire Mexico bench rose to console him.

    His presence, composure on the ball, his passing, his defensive solidity – he’s a huge asset to this team.

    It will be really tough for El Tri to advance in this tournament without him.

  • 30 minutes substitution

    Edson Alvarez was led off the pitch in tears and replaced by Luis Romo.

  • Oh yeah. Edson Alvarez is injured.

    Alvarez, by far Mexico’s best player, went down with a non-contact injury and was seen writhing on the turf, clutching his hamstring.

    In one of Mexico’s worst first half moments, he was helped off the field by two staff members and replaced by Luis Romo.

    The severity is unknown, but Alvarez’s tournament career may be over.

  • Leon Bailey’s absence

    Jamaica’s Shamar Nicholson was injured and then sidelined but is now back in.

    It seems a good time to remember that Jamaica’s most talented player, Leon Bailey, would have started in place of Nicholson if not for a long-running dispute with the Jamaica Football Federation. Jamaica has Bailey on its Copa America squad, but the player, who plays for Aston Villa in the English Premier League, has opted out.
