A large closing banner hangs at the Conn's store on Kell Boulevard in Wichita Falls, Texas.

Home goods retailer Corne’s HomePlus filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Tuesday and announced plans to close at least 70 stores in 13 states.

Cornes said on its website that it would close 18 stores in Florida, nine in Texas, and seven in Arizona. Other states slated for store closures include Virginia, Colorado, Mississippi, and Oklahoma.

Cornes operates more than 170 stores in 15 southern states and employs more than 4,000 people, according to the company’s website. Cornes, headquartered in The Woodlands, Texas, filed for bankruptcy in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas.

In its fourth-quarter earnings report in April, the company said total revenue was down 7.8% year over year, resulting in a full-year net loss of about $77 million. In December 2023, the company acquired WS Badcock, another home goods retailer operating under the name “Badcock Home Furniture & More” in the southeastern United States.

The acquisition will give the company more than 550 stores across 15 states across the two brands, but Badcock also announced it would close 35 stores.

Cornes did not immediately respond to USA Today’s request for comment.
