Just days after the assassination attempt on former US President Donald Trump, an armed man wearing a balaclava has reportedly been arrested in the area where the Republican National Convention is being held.
The man had an AK-47 pistol concealed in a tactical backpack, according to Fox News, and authorities also found a magazine full of bullets in the bag.
Prominent Republican politicians and officials are gathering at the Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee this week for the Republican Convention.
“US Capitol Police initially saw a suspect in the street acting suspiciously, wearing a ski mask and a large tactical backpack,” CNN reported, citing Milwaukee police.
In a separate incident, a man was shot and killed by police after a knife fight near a Republican event.
This comes just days after a 20-year-old man was shot and killed in an attempt to assassinate the 78-year-old former president at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania.
Trump was shot at a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday by suspect Thomas Matthew Crooks, who shot him and injured him in the ear, but survived. Trump said the attack left his face bloodied and the bullet penetrated “the upper part of my right ear.”
Donald Trump was formally nominated as the Republican presidential candidate on Monday and chose 39-year-old Ohio Senator J.D. Vance as his running mate.
While President Trump has grown increasingly confident of a surprise return to the White House despite multiple legal challenges and two impeachments during his first term, President Joe Biden is reeling from low polls and health concerns raised by Democrats.
