* High temperature warning 11am to 8pm*

Today’s Daily Chart

It’s a somewhat subjective rating of the weather for that day on a scale of 0 to 10.

0/10: Even as this scorching heat draws to a close, this triple-digit repeat has no numbers.

Quick Forecast

  • today: Very hot, with storms possible during the day. Highs: 97-103.
  • tonight: Very muggy. Low: 73-82.
  • tomorrow: Very hot, with thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening. High: 95-100.

Detailed forecast

The hottest heatwave of this summer so far will peak today, with temperatures approaching the 104 degree record set during the hottest summer of 1988. There may be some relief from sudden thunderstorms later today, but more widespread showers and storms are expected tomorrow. Temperatures will return to average this weekend before storm chances increase again. We’re almost there. Hang in there.

Today (Tuesday): Another sunny day with dangerously hot high temperatures in the upper 90s to low 100s. High humidity (dew point around 70 degrees) will push the heat index to near 110. Take extra caution with outdoor activities and avoid them if possible. Light winds of 5-10 mph out of the southwest won’t help. Today’s high temperature will be 104 degrees at all three main stations (Washington, Dulles, and Baltimore), so we may just miss the 1988 record. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible late in the day for most locations, but they are unlikely. Reliability: High

tonight: Mostly cloudy and humid, with lows in the 70s to low 80s F in the city. Light winds around 10 mph out of the south. Reliability: High

Tomorrow (Wednesday): It will still be very hot with mostly sunny conditions and highs in the mid to upper 90s F (possible 100 F), but the hot weather will subside quickly as clouds increase in the afternoon and widespread thunderstorms develop in the late afternoon and evening. Some storms may be strong to severe with heavy downpours and gusty winds. Otherwise, winds will again be out of the southwest at 5 to 10 mph. Reliability: High

tomorrow night: Mainly showers and thunderstorms in the evening, then partly sunny, with lows in the 70s F. Reliability: Medium to high

Future outlook

Thursday A cold front is stationary across the region, bringing mostly cloudy to partly cloudy weather. Scattered rain and thunderstorms are expected most over the southern and eastern parts of the region as highs range in the mid to upper 80s F. There is still a chance of rain and storms Thursday night as it becomes partly cloudy late in the evening with lows dropping to the 60s to near 70 F. Reliability: Moderate

Friday Partly to mostly sunny skies will be seen, highs will again be in the mid to upper 80s F, and humidity will drop significantly (yay!). Humidity will increase a bit Friday night, with partly cloudy skies and lows in the mid to near 70 F. Reliability: Moderate

of weekend Partly cloudy skies. A southern front will begin to move northward gradually, bringing mostly cloudy skies and scattered thunderstorms mainly in the afternoons and evenings both days. Humidity will return to moderate levels, with highs in the upper 80s to near 90s F on Saturday and 90s to low 90s F on Sunday. Saturday night will also be mostly cloudy with scattered showers and storms, mainly in the evening, and lows in the mid to low 60s F. Reliability: Moderate
