Besides Peter Welch, several other Democratic leaders also called on Joe Biden, who faltered in the debates, to provide compelling evidence that he has a realistic path to reelection.
Washington: As the US presidential election heats up, Senator Peter Welch on Wednesday became the first Democratic senator to publicly call on Joe Biden to not seek reelection amid growing concerns about his age and health. “In the national interest, I call on President Biden to withdraw from the election,” the Vermont senator wrote in an opinion piece in The Washington Post.

According to The Washington Post, Peter Welch and several other Democratic leaders have called on Joe Biden to provide compelling evidence of a realistic path to reelection following his debate missteps, sagging approval ratings in battleground states and growing concerns that he may not be able to beat former US President Donald Trump in the presidential election.
Some Democratic leaders are questioning whether Joe Biden can win reelection after disappointing performances in the debates and weak polling in key states. They are calling on Biden to lay out a clear path to victory against his likely opponent in the next election, former President Donald Trump.”
But despite private calls from Democrats for him to withdraw, Biden vowed to “continue the campaign to finish” the November election. Biden has remained adamant, telling Democratic lawmakers in a letter on Monday he will continue campaigning despite growing concerns about his mental health.
Biden said he wouldn’t run again “if I wasn’t confident I could beat Donald Trump.”
“Despite all the speculation in the press and elsewhere, I want you to know that I am determined to remain in this race, to fight to the end and to defeat Donald Trump,” he added.
Additionally, in a letter distributed by his reelection campaign, Biden also said there are “42 days until the Democratic Convention and 119 days until the general election.”
In the letter, Biden called for unity within the party and stressed the need for a unified effort to defeat former President Donald Trump in the next election.
“Any weakening of resolve or lack of clarity about the agenda ahead will only help Trump and hurt us. It’s time to come together, move forward as a party and defeat Donald Trump,” Biden said.
