Trey McKenney of Orchard Lake St. Mary’s Preparatory High School and Milena Cotter of Salem were named the Male and Female Athletes of the Year on Tuesday night at the 2024 Detroit High School Sports Awards presented by Detroit Area Honda Dealers, a show produced in partnership with the U.S. Army.
The show took place at the Fillmore and honored more than 300 student-athletes from metro Detroit and surrounding counties.
Finalists for boys’ player of the year were Darius Mullins of Novi Detroit Catholic Central and Isaiah Marshall of Southfield A&T.
Finalists for Female Athlete of the Year were Stella Chapman of Ann Arbor Pioneer and Lauren Timpf of Macomb Lutheran North.

McKechnie could go to a prep school. He could take his talents outside of Michigan. But this five-star recruit won’t do that. His goal? To graduate from Orchard Lake St. Mary’s and win another championship.
And if he continues to perform like he has this year, he might even win the Mr. Basketball title.
If McEneaney wants to have an even bigger and better senior year, he’ll be hard-pressed to top his own performance. Earning the Boys Basketball Player of the Year award on the same day, McEneaney averaged a double-double of 22 points and 10 rebounds this year, along with 2.5 assists.
He is ranked No. 1 in the state, No. 2 in the nation at small forward and No. 14 overall. He has 36 offers and everyone is looking to where he will play in college.

Looking at Cotter’s stats this year for the first time, you have to blink multiple times to make sure you’re not crazy.
Not really, because Cotter will go down in history as the most decorated lacrosse player in Michigan high school history.
She has scored 215 goals this season, beating the previous single-season record by 43. She ranks 1st, 3rd, 4th and 5th on the state’s single-season game scoring list. She is also first in career goals.
That’s why she was named the Women’s Lacrosse Player of the Year earlier in the night.
She finished her four-year high school career with 472 goals in 49 games, about half the number of games it took the previous record holder to achieve that mark, and yes, it’s another state record.
Cotter, a five-star recruit, plans to play at the collegiate level at Syracuse University.
