Disney Entertainment and ESPN chief technology officer Aaron LaBerge announced Monday that he is leaving the Burbank-based media giant and joining casino and sports betting company Penn Entertainment.
The Pennsylvania-based company, which provides integrated entertainment, sports content and casino gaming experiences, said LaBarge will begin his new role as the company’s chief technology officer in July. He spent over 20 years at Disney, specializing in technology and products for the company’s media division.
LaBarge will continue to work with ESPN, as Penn Entertainment is behind ESPN Bet, the sports network’s gambling operation.
“I’m excited to join another talented team at PENN Interactive and lead our technology strategy,” Laberge said in a statement.
“PENN Entertainment is at the forefront of the rapidly changing gaming and sports media industry. I will use my experience at Disney and ESPN to make ESPN BET an integral part of the sports fan experience. Together, we will push boundaries and redefine how fans interact with sports and games.”
In a memo to his team on Monday, LaBarge explained that he decided to leave Disney for personal reasons related to his family.
“Disney is more than just a company to me. It’s my home, my inspiration, and it’s been part of the most rewarding chapter of my life, both personally and professionally,” LaBarge said. I’m writing it in my notes.
“The true magic of Disney lies not only in our stories and technology, but in each and every one of you. Your passion, creativity, and talent made my trip an unforgettable one.”
Disney Chairman Dana Walden, Alan Bergman and Jimmy Pitaro then informed staff that a search for LaBarge’s replacement was underway. Chris Lawson, executive vice president of content operations for Disney Entertainment and ESPN, will assume an interim leadership role in the months ahead of LaBarge’s departure.
