Donald Trump may have just had the best week of his political life.

Former President Donald Trump may have had the best week of his political life.

President Trump has been facing unsettling weeks of news as he faces President Joe Biden in November’s presidential election.

In May, a New York jury found Trump guilty of falsifying business documents to hide hush money payments to adult-film star Stormy Daniels, but he maintained his innocence and vowed to appeal. In the weeks since, polls have shown a slight, and perhaps noticeable, drop in his approval rating.

But his fortunes appear to have reversed this week following a series of positive poll results, with Americans viewing him as the winner of Thursday night’s presidential debate with Biden.

Newsweek Emails were sent to the Trump and Biden campaigns seeking comment.

CNN reports Trump wins debate

Trump sparred with Biden on issues including the economy, immigration and abortion during Thursday night’s debate, but viewers quickly noticed that Biden got off to a poor start: His voice was raspy, he seemed to mumble his answers multiple times throughout the night and he did little to ease swing voter concerns about their age.

The tone after the debate was that Trump was more energetic than Biden, easing concerns some Democrats had about Trump’s age. Many Democrats have called on Biden to drop out of the race, while Republicans have praised Trump’s performance.

A CNN poll conducted immediately after the debate showed that a significant majority of viewers, including Democratic supporters, believed Trump would win, with 67% saying he performed well and 33% predicting a Biden victory.

Only 53% of Democrats say Biden is doing a better job than Trump of addressing concerns about whether he is fit to serve another four years in office.

Still, Trump has also faced criticism for his performance in the debate.

CNN’s fact-checking team found that throughout the night, President Trump made 30 false statements on a range of topics, including that Democrats support post-birth abortion, that there have been no terrorist attacks during his presidency, and that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi turned down an offer to send in 10,000 National Guard troops ahead of the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol.

CNN noted that Trump has made “many more” false statements than Biden.

Despite calls for him to step aside, Biden’s campaign has denied concerns about his age. Biden has said he thinks he did a good job, while Vice President Kamala Harris, in a post-debate CNN interview, called Biden’s performance a “slow start” but a “strong” finish.

Trump leads Biden in pre-debate polls

Even before the debate began, some polls were pointing in Trump’s favor after Biden narrowly closed the gap on him last week.

A New York Times/Siena College poll of 1,226 voters conducted June 20-25 found Trump leading the national popular vote by about 3 percentage points, which could translate into leads in key battleground states that could determine the election outcome.

Meanwhile, a Quinnipiac University poll conducted June 20-24 among 1,405 registered voters found Trump leading by four points (49 percent to 45 percent) in the head-to-head race.

The YouGov/CBS News poll, conducted June 17-21 among 1,878 voters, found Trump leading by one point (50 percent to 49 percent).

Meanwhile, recent polls have shown Biden in the lead.

The Ledger/New York Post poll, conducted June 22-24 among 878 voters, shows Biden leading in head-to-head battles, 43 percent to 41 percent.

Supreme Court rules in favor of defendant on January 6, but impact on Trump unclear

On Friday, just hours after the debate, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in a landmark case surrounding the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, in which a group of Trump supporters violently protested the results of the 2020 election, which Trump claimed without evidence was stolen from him through widespread voter fraud.

The court has narrowed the scope of a federal obstruction statute used in many prosecutions related to the riot, including against a former president.

The ruling could have an impact on the federal election interference lawsuit against President Trump, but it is unclear to what extent it will affect the case.

Neama Rahamani, a former federal prosecutor, said: Newsweek On Friday, “The Fisher decision is great news, coming just one day after Trump’s crushing victory in the presidential debate. A majority of justices have ruled that criminal defendants must obstruct documents and records related to official proceedings.”

“The question now for the lower courts is whether the Capitol rioters engaged in obstruction of documents and records in their attempt to stop Congress from certifying the election. The same question applies to Trump’s fake electoral college scheme,” he added.
