The Fly Eagles fly their way to the ESPYS!
On Monday, June 24, ESPN announced the four teams nominated for its 10th annual Sports Humanitarian Awards, with Philadelphia’s football team, the Philadelphia Eagles, being nominated.
“Sports has the power to bring people together, inspire positive change and make a difference in communities that need it most,” said Kevin Martinez, ESPN vice president of corporate citizenship. “ESPN is proud that the Sports Humanitarian Awards will once again recognize athletes and sportspeople who are using the power of sport to make a difference in communities around the world.”
The Eagles were nominated for the notable work they do with the Eagles Autism Foundation, led by Chairman and CEO Jeffrey Lurie.
Lurie’s passion for the cause is connected to that of her brother, Peter, who lives with developmental and neurological disabilities that affect his learning, behavior and interactions with others.
The foundation was established not only to fund scientific advancements and research, but also to create a shift from awareness to action.
By raising funds for research and spreading awareness of the cause around the world, the team was able to make a difference.
The organization has raised $30 million for research and care programs since its founding in 2018, and in 2024 will raise just over $8.1 million from proceeds from its seventh annual 5K Eagles Autism Challenge, providing access to more research projects and community grants around the world.
“Foundation proceeds support 116 autism research projects and community grants around the world,” the Philadelphia Eagles’ website states. “The Eagles Autism Foundation also provides year-round support to Lincoln Financial Field’s sensory room, neurodiverse employment programs, all-ability programs and more.”
In addition to the Eagles’ nominations, Angel City Football Club, Indianapolis Colts and Miami Heat were also announced as contenders for the award.
The annual ESPYS will air live on July 11, 2024 at 8pm ET/PT.
