The Election Commission (EC) has directed the Chief Election Officers of the states and Union Territories (UTs) where the next elections are scheduled to be held to complete the Special Summary Revision (SSR) of the electoral rolls by August 20. The states and UTs going to polls include Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), Haryana, Jharkhand and Maharashtra.
The move paves the way for holding assembly elections in these regions after completion of SSR.

Election Commission Timeline:
Completion Deadline: The SSR process must be completed by August 20th.
due date: The deadline to register to vote is July 1st.
States and Union Territories concernedThe order includes the states of Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana, Jharkhand and Maharashtra.
The Election Commission is also preparing for 47 by-elections scheduled across the country.
The Election Commission is conducting training sessions in Delhi for officials from polling states as part of preparations to ensure efficient conduct of elections.
Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Elections 2024
Following the Supreme Court’s order to hold the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections by September 30, the Election Commission is expected to begin the electoral process soon.
Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, at an earlier press conference, said, “The story of the large turnout of the people of Jammu and Kashmir in the Lok Sabha elections is extremely hopeful and inspiring and shows how keen people are to participate in democracy. It is crucial that people come together in peace, realise their aspirations and decide their own future and governance. The Commission is happy to make this happen and we will soon commence the process of state assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday announced that preparations for elections in Jammu and Kashmir have also begun. “You have ensured the victory of Jamhuriyat,” the prime minister said at an event in Srinagar. [democracy] “In this election, we broke the (voter turnout) record for the first time in 40 years and won.”
He credited the high voter turnout in the Lok Sabha elections to the youth of Jammu and Kashmir, adding, “I have come here to personally thank you for keeping the flag of Jamhuriyat flying high.”

Special Summary Revision (SSR) Schedule
The SSR schedule includes:
Door-to-door survey by BLO: Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will conduct surveys to identify unregistered voters, duplicate registrations, deceased electors and those who have moved permanently.
Correction of the electoral roll entry: Necessary corrections will be made to ensure the accuracy of the electoral roll.
The completion of the SSR and subsequent publication of the electoral roll will pave the way for the upcoming parliamentary elections, ensuring that all voters are covered and that the electoral process is transparent and efficient.
