The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Wednesday summoned Andhra Pradesh’s chief secretary and police chief over recent post-poll violence in the state, sources told India Today TV.

Officials will be in New Delhi on Thursday to personally explain why the regime has failed to contain the post-poll violence and pre-emptive steps to prevent such incidents from happening in the future. He has been asked to appear before the committee.

Post-poll violence between the ruling YSRCP and the opposition TDP was reported in some parts of the state on Tuesday, while assembly and assembly polls were held simultaneously on Monday. The BJP also claimed that workers were attacked by his YSRCP during voting.

The Election Commission also reminded the state government that the Model Code of Conduct remains in force and directed the Chief Commissioner and Superintendent of Police to ensure that such incidents are not repeated.

Officials said Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar was personally monitoring the election space to ensure a peaceful and violence-free voting process.

Lok Sabha elections and state assembly polls in Andhra Pradesh were held simultaneously on May 13 in the fourth phase. The state recorded over 78 per cent voter turnout in 25 Lok Sabha and 175 assembly constituencies.
