Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Council of Ministers are likely to be sworn in on June 8. PM Modi arrived at the Presidential Palace today to meet President Draupadi Murmu. The NDA will now be in power for a third consecutive term.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived at the BJP headquarters in Delhi after results from the Lok Sabha elections showed the NDA returning to power at the centre for a third consecutive term but falling short of a majority on its own for the first time since 2014.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave his first reaction after the NDA was set to remain in power for a third consecutive term. “The people have placed their faith in the NDA for a third consecutive term! This is a feat in the history of India,” PM Modi said in a post on X.

“I bow to the Janata Janardhan for this affection and promise to continue the good work done in the last 10 years to continue fulfilling the aspirations of the people. I also salute all the Karyakartas for their hard work. Their extraordinary efforts can never be expressed in words,” he added.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is due to arrive at the BJP headquarters in Delhi where he will meet and address party workers. The visit comes after electoral trends and results saw the NDA win and the BJP fail to secure a majority on its own.

BJP leader Smriti Irani on Tuesday conceded defeat in Amethi and said she had received the people’s trust and would continue to work for the constituency as a BJP activist. According to the ECI, Indian National Congress’ Kishori Lal defeated her BJP rival by 539,228 votes.

Compared to its total tally of seats in 2019, the Indian Union parties have won a total of 104 seats while the NDA lost 49. As per ECI trends and results, the total tally of the NDA now stands at 294 seats while India has 231 seats.

Indian National Congress Party leader Mallikarjun Kharge said the party received a mandate from the people in the Lok Sabha elections, calling it a mandate for Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He said the people did not give a majority to any party this time, but the Indian National Congress Party humbly accepts it.

The BJP is leading in Gujarat by one seat, but the party has won all 26 seats in the state in the last two Lok Sabha elections. The BJP is leading in 25 of the 26 seats. The party has already won the Surat seat unopposed.

The BJP-led NDA crossed the 300-seat mark in the Lok Sabha elections for the first time since the ECI began publishing election results data, while India’s total number of seats rose to 223.

Narendra Modi is set to return as India’s prime minister for a third consecutive term, but it will be the first time he takes office without his Bharatiya Janata Party holding a majority on its own.

Most of the seats lost by the BJP since the last elections have been from big states like Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and West Bengal. The BJP, which won 62 of the 80 seats in 2019, has been reduced to 38 seats. In Maharashtra, the MVA is leading in 28 of the 48 seats and the NDA in 19. The NDA won 41 seats in the 2019 elections. In West Bengal, the BJP’s number of seats has dropped to 10 from 18 in 2019 and the TMC is leading in 31 seats.

While the Bharatiya Janata Party has almost doubled its number of seats from 44 in 2014 to 52 in 2019, the Bharatiya Janata Party has seen a significant decline in its number of seats from 272 in 2014 and 303 in 2019 to 244 in 2024.
