England and Pakistan’s Twenty20 World Cup preparations were again affected by bad weather, with the third international match in Cardiff on Tuesday being abandoned without a ball being bowled.

The horrific scenes in the Welsh capital came after they suffered yet another comprehensive defeat in the first game of this four-match T20 series at Headingley.

England won by 23 runs at Edgbaston and remain 1-0 with one game in hand at The Oval on Thursday, but this latest cancellation comes just a week before they begin their T20 World Cup title defence against Scotland in Barbados on June 4.

Rain began falling in Cardiff on Tuesday, an hour before the scheduled kick-off at 17:30 GMT, with Sophia Gardens expected to accommodate only 15,600 people.

However, the toss was postponed due to bad weather, leaving the playing field and open space at Sophia Gardens completely covered.

Then, minutes after inspection at 1910 GMT, the umpire called off the game because the outfield was soggy and rain continued to fall.

The team will now head into the final game at the Oval in London on Thursday, hoping to grab a chance in one last match before the T20 World Cup.

Pakistan, the 2009 T20 World Cup winners, will kick off this year’s tournament against co-hosts USA in Dallas on June 6.
